Natural remedies for pregnancy related conditions

Sometimes pregnancy can be far from the calm, stress-free time you want it to be. It can be even harder if you suffer from any of the many common pregnancy-related conditions.

Natural remedies can be a wonderful option for when you’re pregnant to relieve symptoms. They are gentle on your body, and help you avoid pharmaceutical options that could be dangerous for your growing baby. Here are a few natural remedies for some common pregnancy related conditions.


The hormones racing around your body when you’re pregnant make acne a common condition. If fact, one out of every two pregnant women will experience acne as part of their pregnancy. Pregnancy acne is a completely normal cosmetic condition that will resolve itself naturally. Sticking to this simple skincare regime will encourage healthy skin:

Use a gentle, oil-free, alcohol-free, and non-abrasive cleanser.

Apply cleanser with a clean, soft washcloth or cotton pad.

Avoid over-cleansing. It can overstimulate the skin's oil glands.

After cleansing, rinse your skin with lukewarm water. Gently pat dry and apply moisturizer.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are especially common in pregnancy. When you’re pregnant, the amount of blood circulating around your body rises massively. Your growing baby weighs down on the veins in your pelvis and major arteries. All this extra pressure, combined with the pregnancy hormone progesterone relaxing your blood vessel walls, makes vein walls weak and puts pressure on vein valves. All this makes varicose veins more likely.

One of the most common treatments for varicose veins is surgical intervention, but many people may want to try natural remedies or other approaches before resorting to surgery.

Garlic’s blood thinning and anti-inflammatory properties make it one of the most common natural remedies for varicose veins. To use garlic as a natural remedy, slice up six garlic cloves and combine them in a jar with orange juice (fresh squeezed), and two tablespoons of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 12 hours, and then massage the inflamed veins with the mixture.

Cayenne pepper is another popular natural varicose vein remedy. It is a rich source of vitamin C and bioflavonoids that increase blood circulation, easing the pain of varicose veins. Use a teaspoon of cayenne pepper several times a day, as a flavour in soups and stews, or simply add a teaspoon to hot water.


Sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy is common. When figuring out how to treat sciatica, it’s important to find the root cause of the pain. Pregnancy puts stress on your back, which can pinch your sciatic nerve, but sciatic pain is also caused by muscular tension, uterine fibroids, a retroverted uterus, sacral bone fracture or endometriosis. Try these natural pain relief methods, but if pain persists, consult your doctor or specialist.

Stretching and yoga exercises can give great relief from sciatic pain. If the pain is caused by muscle tension or pregnancy changes, gently warming up and stretching the sore muscles relieves the pressure.

Physical therapy is often the next stop after doing your own stretches. A masseur, chiropractor, physiotherapist or osteopath can gently correct spinal misalignment caused by pregnancy body changes, as well as easing the muscle tension that leads to sciatic pain.

Pregnant women are cautioned to avoid using pharmaceutical medications, so gentle, natural remedies can be the perfect solution to care for pregnancy related conditions like acne, varicose veins or sciatica.
